About the program

 This volunteer program is designed for nature enthusiasts and those passionate about sustainable agriculture and conservation. Set in the picturesque mangrove landscapes of West Lombok, you’ll work alongside local farmers to maintain stingless bee colonies, harvest honey, and learn about the crucial role these bees play in local ecosystems.

The program offers a unique opportunity to engage with a diverse ecosystem while supporting the livelihoods of local communities through sustainable farming. As part of a team, you’ll assist in hive inspections, bee health management, and the honey harvesting process. You’ll also deepen your understanding of how stingless bees contribute to pollination and the interconnectedness of beekeeping and mangrove conservation. By volunteering, you’ll gain hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture and contribute to the preservation of both mangrove habitats and pollinator populations.

Typical day

Morning Shift (8 AM – 12 PM)

  • Bee Care: Assist with setting up and maintaining hives for stingless bee colonies.
  • Honey Harvesting: Participate in the harvesting and processing of honey, learning about the journey from hive to jar.
  • Community Engagement: Work alongside local farmers, learning about traditional beekeeping practices and sustainable farming methods.

Midday (12 PM – 1 PM)

  • Lunch Break: Relax and enjoy lunch with fellow volunteers, or spend time with local farmers learning about their beekeeping stories.

Afternoon Shift (1 PM – 4 PM)

  • Pollination Education: Learn about the ecological role of stingless bees in pollination and their impact on agriculture.
  • Community Engagement: Continue to collaborate with local beekeepers, gaining insights into sustainable farming and eco-friendly practices.

Evening (Optional)

  • Reflection and Knowledge Sharing: Gather with the team to reflect on the day’s activities, share experiences, and brainstorm ideas for improving beekeeping practices.
  • Free Time: Explore the surrounding mangrove area or relax in your accommodation.

Requirements

  • Must be interested in sustainable farming and conservation
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken); proficiency in other languages a plus
  • Ages 18–35
  • Experience with farming, beekeeping, or environmental conservation preferred
  • Respect for local customs, nature, and wildlife
  • No criminal or terrorism-related record
  • Must not promote ideological or political views on social media
  • Travel insurance & valid passport required
  • Interview required before approval

Volunteers are responsible for their transportation from Lombok International Airport to the program location. Upon arrival, a detailed orientation will be provided, covering program goals, sustainable beekeeping practices, safety protocols, and local customs. Volunteers will also be introduced to the local farmers and community, ensuring a smooth integration into the program.

Year-round. Minimum stay: 1 week. Maximum stay: 8 weeks. (Extensions possible based on mutual agreement)

  • Accommodation: Private room in a peaceful setting, within proximity to the mangrove area.
  • Meals: Daily meals provided; access to the kitchen for preparing other meals.
  • Laundry: Available nearby at an affordable price, with convenient service options.
  • Internet: Basic Wi-Fi connection for communication and sharing progress.
  • Certificate: Issued upon successful completion of the program, recognizing your contribution to sustainable farming and environmental conservation.
  • Drinks: Daily tea, coffee, or fresh coconut water provided to keep you refreshed.
  • Flights and Transportation: Volunteers cover their travel to Lombok and local transportation (including airport transfers and scooter rental)
  • Travel Insurance: Must be arranged by each volunteer
  • Visa and Vaccination Fees: All immigration and health-related costs are the participant’s responsibility
  • Personal Expenses: Includes souvenirs, snacks, and extra meals
  • Accommodation: Extra lodging outside scheduled program dates is not included
  • Medical Expenses: Volunteers must cover their own health costs
  • Recreation and Tours: Activities like surfing or scuba diving are not included but may be arranged independently
  • Lost or Damaged Equipment: Volunteers are liable for their own gear and any loaned materials
