The Background

Bale Nara Lombok is a social impact enterprise dedicated to empowering local communities through immersive social impact travelling. Our focus spans four key areas: vocational training, environmental action, kids language education, and ecotourism development, where travelers engage directly with grassroots initiatives. By combining local wisdom with global collaboration, we aim to create sustainable impact that nurtures nature, fosters learning, builds livelihoods, and strengthens cultural resilience across Lombok.

Sustainable Development Goals Projects

VOCATIONAL TRAINING

Support students and youth in villages by sharing skills in digital tools, storytelling, or creative entrepreneurship. Travelers help build confidence, expand opportunity, and improve job readiness through inclusive, hands-on learning that nurtures creativity and self-reliance.

ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION

Join community-driven efforts like mangrove planting, beach cleanups, bird monitoring, and zero-waste education. Travelers support hands-on conservation while learning from indigenous knowledge, local eco-leaders, and deep, time-honored nature-based wisdom in rural Lombok.

KIDS LANGUAGE EDUCATION

Bring language and learning to life for village students through fun weekend classes, storytelling sessions, and cross-cultural exchanges. Travelers help build curiosity, confidence, critical thinking, and creativity in eager young learners from isolated remote communities.

ECOTOURISM DEVELOPMENT

Support sustainable tourism by helping local guides improve their language, developing signage and tours, or co-creating ecotourism experiences that protect nature, celebrate culture, and empower rural communities through authentic, collaborative engagement.

What they Say?

I’m deeply grateful to have started as a social impact traveler at Bale Nara Lombok, responsible for SDG-17 (Partnership for the Goals). This journey inspires me and gives me a strong reason to keep returning to Lombok.

I am a passionate diver with an advanced open water certificate and experience of more than thirty dives, including a live-aboard trip on the Great Barrier Reef. Travelling allows me to combine my love for the ocean with hands-on work. It gives me a chance to protect coral reefs while gaining valuable experience.

Fiona Groeschner

I am a traveler from the United States with a strong love for the ocean and nature. Travelling here gives me the chance to protect the reefs while learning new skills in conservation. It allows me to connect with the local community, contribute to sustainability, and give back to a place that has inspired me deeply.

Josh Goldberg

As a traveler, I taught Community-Based Tourism at Bale Nara Lombok’s partner campus and conducted preliminary research for the Fair Tourism Foundation in the Netherlands. I’m deeply grateful for the support of so many helpful stakeholders during my time in Lombok.

Theresa Auer

Germany

I spent six months in Lombok supporting Bale Nara Lombok while on sabbatical. Coming from South Africa, a country so different from Lombok in terms of its warmth and safety, I was truly amazed. I’ve already decided to return to this island and make it my permanent home.
