About the program

This volunteer program offers a hands-on opportunity for those passionate about marine conservation to actively restore and protect coral reefs in one of the world’s most biodiverse regions, the Coral Triangle. Located in Gili Nanggu, West Lombok, the program focuses on the rehabilitation of coral ecosystems through activities like coral planting, reef monitoring, and underwater cleaning.

Volunteers will gain an in-depth understanding of coral ecosystems, their ecological significance, and the various challenges they face due to human activity and climate change. Working closely with local marine experts and communities, you’ll contribute to restoring reef health and improving the resilience of marine biodiversity.

Typical day

Morning Shift (7:30 AM – 12:00 PM)

  • Coral Planting: Assist in planting coral fragments to restore damaged reefs and support marine biodiversity.
  • Reef Monitoring: Help survey the reef’s health, tracking coral regeneration and documenting marine life.
  • Marine Education: Participate in brief educational sessions about coral biology and ecosystem health.

Midday (12:00 PM – 1:00 PM)

  • Lunch Break: Relax and enjoy lunch with fellow volunteers, or engage with local experts to learn more about marine conservation.

Afternoon Shift (1:00 PM – 4:00 PM)

  • Underwater Cleaning: Participate in efforts to remove debris and pollutants from the coral reefs to improve water quality.
  • Community Engagement: Work with local villagers to raise awareness about marine conservation and share knowledge.
  • Marine Education: Continue learning from marine biologists about sustainable practices for coral protection.

Evening (Optional)

  • Reflection and Knowledge Sharing: Gather with the team to discuss the day’s activities, share experiences, and explore ways to improve conservation efforts.

Requirements

  • Must be passionate about marine conservation and coral reef protection
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken); proficiency in other languages a plus

Volunteers are responsible for their transportation from Lombok International Airport to Gili Nanggu. Upon arrival, a comprehensive orientation will be provided, covering program objectives, coral restoration techniques, safety protocols, and local customs. Volunteers will also receive a briefing on the region’s conservation efforts and how they can contribute.

Year-round. Minimum stay: 1 week. Maximum stay: 8 weeks. (Extensions possible based on mutual agreement)

  • Accommodation: Private room in a peaceful setting, located near Gili Nanggu’s coral restoration site.
  • Meals: Daily meals provided; access to the kitchen for preparing other meals.
  • Laundry: Available nearby at an affordable price, with convenient service options.
  • Internet: Basic Wi-Fi connection for communication and sharing progress.
  • Certificate: Issued upon successful completion of the program, recognizing your contribution to coral reef restoration and marine conservation.
  • Drinks: Daily tea, coffee, or fresh coconut water provided to keep you refreshed.
  • Flights and Transportation: Volunteers cover their travel to Lombok and local transportation (including airport transfers and scooter rental)
  • Travel Insurance: Must be arranged by each volunteer
  • Visa and Vaccination Fees: All immigration and health-related costs are the participant’s responsibility
  • Personal Expenses: Includes souvenirs, snacks, and extra meals
  • Accommodation: Extra lodging outside scheduled program dates is not included
  • Medical Expenses: Volunteers must cover their own health costs
  • Recreation and Tours: Activities like surfing or scuba diving are not included but may be arranged independently
  • Lost or Damaged Equipment: Volunteers are liable for their own gear and any loaned materials
